Gibson County reigns - Haubstadt miss crowned at fair

Kristen Ann Schmitt of Haubstadt, Ind., was crowned the 50th Miss Indiana State Fair on Sunday.
Representing Gibson County, Schmitt beat out 83 other contestants in the pageant at the Pepsi Coliseum and became the first Gibson County entrant to be named Miss Indiana State Fair.
According to the pageant's Web site, Schmitt, the daughter of Charlie and Judy Schmitt, is about to start her sophomore year at Purdue University, where she is a member of Purdue Block and Bridle, a livestock educational organization. She is a lifelong member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Haubstadt. She enjoys sports, baking, singing, showing cattle, gardening with her mother and volunteering at hospitals.
The first runner-up was Miss Delaware County, Brianna Beaty, while Miss Posey County, Morgan Michelle Emery, was fourth runner-up.
Judging categories in the Miss Indiana State Fair Pageant include interview, evening gown and professional wear.
As the 2007 winner, Schmitt will serve as a spokesperson for the Indiana State Fair next year. According to the pageant's Web site, past winners have traveled throughout the state in June and July, visiting county fairs and festivals. Appearances often consist of participation in fair activities, county fair and festival parades, county queen pageants and contestant get-togethers.

| Extending the Indiana State Fair to 17 days in 2009 will add at least $1.3 million in revenues and $300,000 in profits the first year, according to fair officials.
"If it didn't make sense financially, this would have never been recommended to the commission," said Cindy Hoye, State Fair executive director. "If there had been a financial risk or loss involved, the dates would not have been extended."
The financial impact was a key consideration Thursday when the Indiana State Fair Commission voted to extend the event to 17 days from 12. The commission plans to re-evaluate the length of the fair after three years of the extended calendar.
