| Michigan News | Student volunteer wins statewide honor

Jace Kamhorst, a 17-year-old Fremont High School senior, was named the 2007 Youth Volunteer of the Year by the Michigan Association of Fairs and Exhibitions earlier this month.
He is a member of the Holton Happy Hustlers and the Rebel Riders 4-H clubs and has exhibited horses, crafts and agriculture and garden produce. He has also competed in youth tractor driving contests.
Kamhorst was nominated for the award by his 4-H leader Matt Kempf, who said the young man "set the example for other youth about what it is like to be a volunteer." Kamhorst assisted in building a new horse arena and announcer's booth on the Newaygo County Fairgrounds. Kempf was first named Newaygo County's youth volunteer before being nominated for the state award. As Michigan's honoree, he now will be nominated for the national association's award.

Fair suffers from poor attendance, weather

Lousy weather and falling attendance have left the Jackson County Fair in a financial rut.
The fair fund had 82 percent less cash in the bank in 2007 than in 2000. Last year, it lost more than $90,000 overall, including depreciation, according to the county treasurer's office. That left $114,712 in the bank.
