2008 Pennsylvania Fair Guide Now Available
Fairs Offer Travel Destinations, Promote Agriculture
HARRISBURG, Pa., May 9 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Families across the state can plan to experience the rides, entertainment and agriculture products of the commonwealth this summer with the help of the 2008 Pennsylvania Fair Guide, Agriculture Secretary Dennis Wolff said today.
"Fairs are a great way to celebrate Pennsylvania's rich agricultural heritage, and to attract millions of people to fun entertainment, delicious food and a glimpse of farm life," said Wolff. "Pennsylvania's 117 fairs are a family tradition, and the fair guide provides easy access to information about fairs throughout the state, helping ensure that the tradition of fairs is passed on to the next generation."
The new fair guide provides convenient information on fairs by region, including their locations and dates. Pennsylvania is home to 117 county and community fairs, some dating back to the 1700s.
To recognize fairs that have been operating for at least 100 years and 200 years, Governor Edward G. Rendell created the Century and Bicentennial Fair Program in 2006. Currently, there are 36 Century Fairs and four Bicentennial Fairs across the state.
"Part of the tradition of Pennsylvania fairs is harness racing," said Wolff. "This year's fair guide makes it easier than ever to see the up-and-comers in harness racing, with a horse-and-sulky icon beside each of the 15 fairs that offer harness racing events."
In addition to fairs, Pennsylvania is home to educational and affordable agricultural destinations across the state, including farmers markets, wineries and farm stay bed and breakfasts.
To access a 2008 Pennsylvania Fair Guide, visit http://www.agriculture.state.pa.us and click on "Consumers" and then "Pennsylvania Fairs." For more information on Pennsylvania fairs or agritourism, contact Kristi Rooker at 717-346-4202 or krooker@state.pa.us.

CHAMBERSBURG, PA. — The usual harbingers of bad luck failed to work their contrary magic Saturday as Katy Mitchell, the 2007 Franklin County Fair Queen, became the first woman from the county to wear the crown in the 22-year history of the Pennsylvania State Fair Queen pageant.

Belle Vernon native Rebecca Giles has had a whirlwind year.
As the Pennsylvania Lamb and Wool Queen, the California University of Pennsylvania sophomore has traveled nearly 10,000 miles.
She will participate in the Governor's Ball in Harrisburg this month.
"Rebecca works hard at everything she does," said her mother, Marianne Tucheck. "Obviously, we are very proud, and she has earned everything on her own efforts."

Peanut butter and chocolate is a winning combination by most people’s standards, and Kitner is no different. She, however, managed to win the top prize at the Cumberland County Ag Expo’s Hershey Cocoa Classic, making her time at the fair that much sweeter.
It also gave her the opportunity to showcase her cooking talents at the Pennsylvania Farm Show’s Hershey Cocoa Classic, where her peanut butter-frosted chocolate cake was put to the test against 78 other county fair winners across the state.
“I had to bake a chocolate cake containing Hershey’s cocoa from scratch, with my own original recipe,” Kitner said.

Kelsey Breakiron, a sophomore at West Virginia University, has a unique plan to raise tuition money. She'll sell the pig she's showing in the Pennsylvania Farm Show. At 19, Breakiron is aging out of the 4-H program and competing for the last time after winning numerous ribbons in competition at the Fayette County Fair for 11 years. "Everyone keeps complimenting (her pig) and saying, 'The pig looks so good,' so I'm keeping my hopes up," the Hopwood woman said. Breakiron is among several hundred 4-H members and adults from Southwestern Pennsylvania who will head for Harrisburg to show off their animals, jams and jellies, square-dance moves, and even beekeeping skills at the farm show complex.

The 'Fairest' of them All

After a half-century as a West Lampeter Community Fair volunteer — and 33 years as fair treasurer — Lois Anne Risser gets a well-deserved crown.
LANCASTER COUNTY, Pa. - When Lois Anne Risser moved to Lancaster County more than 50 years ago, she was newly married and looking for "a way to get out in the community and get to know the people." So she helped at the milkshake stand at a still-small country fair in Lampeter and then starting keeping its books. When next September rolls around, it will have been 50 years since a young bride rolled up her sleeves to volunteer at the West Lampeter Community Fair. And after years of quiet, hard work for her fair, Risser has been honored by statewide fair officials with a top regional award. This fall, the 75-year-old grandmother of four was honored as "Person of the Year" for the state fair association's Zone 4, which includes Lancaster County.

FFA and 4-H Receive More Than $300,000 in Funding
HARRISBURG, Pa., Aug. 14 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Pennsylvania FFA and 4-H organizations may enhance their programs thanks to more than $300,000 in funds awarded today by the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture. The FFA and 4-H received the funds from Agriculture Secretary Dennis Wolff during Ag Progress Days in Rock Springs, Centre County. "Our youth are the future leaders of Pennsylvania agriculture, our state's number one industry," said Wolff. "The FFA and 4-H encourage youth to explore the many opportunities in agriculture that are available to them. By supporting these programs, we can keep Pennsylvania agriculture growing for generations to come." State FFA officers accepted $71,000 in fair funds, which will be divided among 139 chapters that are home to nearly 8,000 students. State 4-H officers received $236,000 to provide local program support to more than 90,000 members in Pennsylvania. Secretary Wolff chairs the Fair Advisory Board, which approves the funds yearly from the larger $4 million Pennsylvania Fair Fund. The fund helps the state's 115 county and community fairs with annual operating costs and offers financial support to youth organizations with an agricultural mission.
